I was with Jan Spaticchia yesterday, the CEO of énergie fitness clubs to discuss my new Gymtopia project. Following the meeting, Jan was keen to show me energie’s latest club in Milton Keynes which they have just acquired from Fitness First. The 14,000 square foot club has a really nice light and open-plan fee and is less than one minute walk from the mainline railway station. All Fitness First Milton Keynes staff are being transferred to énergie and the ones I met were very upbeat about the change.
This particular club is jointly owned by énergie and their Middle Eastern franchise partner (Qatar-based investment group Ghamin Bin Saad & Sons Holding Group (GSSG). GSSG purchased the eight clubs as part of the investment group’s plans to grow its portfolio of énergie clubs both in the UK and the Middle East simultaneously. The firm plans to invest in 30 clubs in the UK.
The next year will show if the énergie business model can transform the fortunes of the Milton Keynes club along with the other former Fitness First clubs.
