Last night (Thursday 26th June) a major fire caused significant damage at the Fitness First for Women club in Brighton, my home town. The fire broke out in the early hours of the morning when the club was closed, so no members were present. Initially, there was some concern that cleaning staff may have been in the club, but the fire service and police have now reported no casualties.
There are reports of serious fire damage to large sections of the club which is not surprising given that it took several hours to bring the fire under control.
Fitness First has posted the following message on their website:
‘The club, in Queens Road (Brighton), will be closed until further notice. We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused, and we will be writing to members in due course to inform them of the next steps and where possible offer alternative arrangements.’
David Lloyd, Esporta and LA Fitness all have clubs nearby, so it will be interesting to see what level of collaboration now takes place to accommodate affected members while the club is refurbished. My cynical side senses that competitors may see this as an opportunity to exploit rather than offer a supporting hand. Let’s wait and see.
